About

The Dangote Group isn't just Nigeria's biggest company — it's a symbol of what homegrown industry on the continent can look like when ambition meets patience. Here's a closer look at what the group is, what it does, and why it matters.

From Importer to Manufacturer

The Dangote Group began in 1981 (growing out of a trading venture founder Aliko Dangote started in 1977) as a modest operation importing everyday commodities — sugar, salt, rice and other staples — into the Nigerian market.

But importing was never the end goal. Early on, Dangote landed on the insight that would shape everything to come: real, lasting value lies in making things locally, not shipping them in from abroad.

The Power of Backward Integration

This idea has a name — backward integration — and it's the strategy at the heart of the group. Instead of relying on imported finished goods, the company builds the capacity to produce them itself, and wherever possible controls the entire chain from raw material to finished product.

There's a second habit that fuels the growth: reinvestment. Rather than sitting on profits, the group ploughs them back into the business, which is a big part of how it has compounded into the giant it is today.

What the Group Actually Does

Headquartered in Lagos, the Dangote Group is now the largest industrial conglomerate in West Africa, employing tens of thousands of people across multiple countries. Its interests stretch across several core sectors.

Cement — The Flagship

The crown jewel is Dangote Cement, the largest cement producer on the continent, with operations spanning Nigeria, Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, South Africa, Zambia and more.

Food and Consumer Goods

Dangote Sugar Refinery is among the biggest sugar refiners in sub-Saharan Africa, and NASCON Allied Industries leads in salt and seasoning. Both, along with the cement business, are publicly listed on the Nigerian Exchange. The group also produces fertiliser and has interests in packaging, real estate and beverages.

The Game-Changer: The Dangote Refinery

The boldest move in the group's history sits at the Lekki Free Trade Zone near Lagos. Commissioned in May 2023 and built with more than US$19 billion in investment, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery is the world's largest single-train refinery.

It tackled a long-standing paradox: Nigeria is Africa's biggest crude oil producer, yet for decades it imported most of its refined fuel. By 2026, the refinery had pushed past its nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, was supplying the majority of Nigeria's domestic petrol, and had become a serious exporter of refined products — including jet fuel — to markets across Africa, Europe and beyond.

What's Next

The group isn't slowing down. It has announced plans to expand refining capacity toward 1.4 million barrels per day, and under a wider "Vision 2030" strategy, it's targeting roughly US$100 billion in annual revenue by the end of the decade.

The Man and the Mission

The group is led by Aliko Dangote, consistently ranked as the wealthiest person in Africa. Beyond business, its social impact flows through the Aliko Dangote Foundation, one of the largest private foundations on the continent, focused on nutrition, health, education, economic empowerment and disaster relief.

The Bigger Picture

What makes the Dangote story compelling isn't just its scale — it's the blueprint it offers. A company that started by importing goods now refines crude oil at a world scale, embodying the broader dream of African industrialisation: add value at home, rather than exporting raw materials only to buy back the finished product.
